Its serene environment and natural beauty make it a must-visit destination for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers.
Location & overview
- The Pakhro Zone is an eco-tourism/safari zone located within the Sonanadi Range of the Jim Corbett National Park complex (Uttarakhand, India).
- It is accessed via the Pakhro Gate (entry gate) which lies ~ 23 km from Kotdwara.
- The area is part of the buffer/eco-tourism zone rather than the core protected area — meaning that tourism is permitted under certain regulations.
- The zone is characterised by Sal forests, bamboo clusters and perennial streams (in the wider sanctuary) — forming part of the Shiwalik Terai biotic province.
Wildlife & Nature Highlights
- The habitat in Pakhro is composed of dense sal (Shorea) forests, rich bamboo, streams and forested terrain, making it good for large mammals and birds.
- Wildlife you may encounter includes :
- Big mammals : Tigers, leopards, Asian elephants.
- Other mammals : Sambhar deer, spotted deer (chital), wild boar, barking deer, goral, Himalayan black bear & sloth bear in adjoining forests.
- Birds : TOver 500 species of birds have been recorded in the Sonanadi / Pakhro region due to its rich terrain and water-bodies.
- Because it is somewhat less-commercial than some other zones, it is described as “a great choice for visitors who prefer a less commercialised and peaceful wildlife adventure.”
Safari Experience : What to Expect
- Safari in this zone is typically via a “Gypsy” or jeep-type open vehicle (private vehicles are generally not permitted inside the zone).
- Typical safari durations are about 2-3 hours for the designated slot.
- Safari time slots vary by season :
- Summer : Morning entry ~06:00 – 09:30, Evening ~15:00 – 18:30 approx.
- Winter : Morning ~07:00 – 10:00, Evening ~14:00 – 17:30 approx.
- Since this is a less-crowded zone compared to more popular ones, you may find a more relaxed, “off-the-beaten-path” feel (fewer tourists, more peaceful).
- Stay options (Forest Rest Houses – FRHs) are available in or near the zone, such as Pakhro FRH, Morghatti, etc.
Seasonality / Best Time to Visit
- The zone opens for tourism from around 15 October to 15 June (i.e., closed during heavy monsoon months) in many zones of Corbett; Pakhro likewise is subject to season closures.
- One news report notes: When the monsoon session begins, certain parts of the Sonanadi Zone were closed, but day-safari in Pakhro Zone continued (as of a certain year) – so timing may vary depending on forest department decisions.
- Generally wildlife sightings (especially large mammals) are better in dry months when animals come closer to water-holes/streams and vegetation is thinner. Visit in winter to early summer for better chances.
How to Reach
By Air : The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport (Dehradun). From here Pakhro can be reached in about 2 hours.
By Train : Nearest major railway station is at Kotdwara (for the Pakhro Gate).
By Road : From Kotdwara or other nearby towns; Pakhro Zone lies on the Kotdwara-Kalagarh road (jungle road).
Rules, Permits & Things to Note
- Number of vehicles/gypsies in a zone is controlled to avoid overcrowding and maintain ecological balance.
- Private cars/vehicles are not permitted inside the zone; you must book a certified safari vehicle.
- For safety : The terrain can be rough/off-road. Sometimes mobile network may be weak deep inside.
- Respect the wildlife : keep a safe distance, no loud noises, no feeding, follow instructions of the guide/forest staff.
- Dress appropriately for forest: sturdy shoes, long pants, insect repellent, sun protection, water. Early morning can be chilly.
- Stay at lodges/rest houses that are officially sanctioned (forest rest houses or approved resorts) rather than informal stays deep in core zone.
Advantages / Why Visit Pakhro
- Quieter & less commercialised safari experience compared to some of the more crowded zones — ideal for someone wanting a more “wild” feel.
- Good chance of seeing large mammals (elephants, tigers, leopards) as well as rich birdlife.
- Relatively more reachable from Kotdwara/Dehradun side, thus useful for shorter wildlife-stays.
- Coupled with staying at heritage Forest Rest Houses gives a “jungle stay” experience beyond just the safari.
